Broadway resident angered by speeding lorry

A BROADWAY resident was so incensed by a large quarry lorry speeding through the village that he called the police.

The huge, articulated 18-wheeler, heading for nearby Coygen Quarry, was clocked doing 36mph in the 30mph zone. When later questioned, the driver said he had been ‘slowing down’ at the time, and that he was momentarily confused between his speedometer and the clock on the dashboard in his cab.

The resident reported the incident to the police – who told him they would visit the quarry and investigate. The incident happened at 6.50am on Wednesday (Jun 21), despite the fact that bosses at the quarry have promised the community that work doesn’t start until 8am.

The part of the road in question is narrow, involves a blind summit and a bad bend just before the road enters the picturesque village of Broadway.

It is also just a few hundred yards from Laugharne school and is a route to school for many pupils. There is no pavement on this stretch of road.

David Hardy, secretary of the Laugharne Community Association, said: “Association members are monitoring the issue of heavy traffic in and around Laugharne. The situation is pretty dire. The A4066 isn’t fit for the purpose it is currently being used for. For long stretches, the carriageway is too narrow for two HGVs to pass and this results in lorries and other traffic driving on the pavement in order to pass.

“And this has resulted to a number of incidents of damage to people’s homes and cars. This is clearly not acceptable. Laugharne Community Association wants companies that use the road to agree to be better neighbours. The ancient and historic township of Laugharne deserves better and should be protected.”

He added: “We are in a dialogue with the county council’s highways department but this is fast becoming an issue of public safety so we will redouble our efforts to get something done.”
