Carmarthen Town gets free WiFi

A SCHEME initiated and partly funded by the Leader Scheme from Europe has seen Carmarthen Town get free WiFi.

Carmarthen Town Council, Carmarthenshire County Council and local businesses have been working together to ensure that Carmarthen Town is covered by WiFi for the benefit of everyone.

Town Councillor and Carmarthen Sheriff Angharad Jones Leefe, who is chair of the Town Council’s General Purposes Committeem said: ‘This is great news for Carmarthen. We’ve been working with partners for some time to bring this to the Town and it is part of a wider Carmarthenshire project to enhance and provide free access to the internet for local people and visitors.

“We’re very grateful for the support of the local businesses who have agreed to allow the equipment to be installed outside their premises to make sure the system covers as many areas of the town centre as possible. We shouldn’t underestimate the impact free access to the internet has in town centres and there is no doubt that this will provide a great boost to Carmarthen.

“Importantly, businesses and organisations will be able to make use of information generated by the system regarding consumer and visitor patterns of behaviour when they come to Carmarthen and this will make it easier for them to understand what they need to do to organise their services around the needs of the wider public.”

The free WiFi installation programme presently operates in the King Street, Nott Square and Guildhall Square areas, and it is also operating in Carmarthen Park including the rugby pitch/velodrome and the skate park.

The remaining areas of the town centre will be covered as soon as the equipment installation work is completed.

A message will automatically ‘pop up’ on people’s mobile telephones notifying them that free WiFi is available and all they will need to do is log into the system and they will have immediate and free internet access.
