Carmarthen’s first sushi restaurant has opened

CARMARTHEN now has its first ever sushi restaurant, as Japanese Sun opens on Queen Street.

The town centre has a variety of cuisines available in its many restaurants, yet up until now, there had not been a sushi restaurant.

The establishment is run by Patrycja Domek, originally from Poland and living in Lampeter, who has nearly 20 years experience in the restaurant industry. She saw the gap in the market, with more and more people choosing to pursue healthier options when dining out.

Traditional Japanese sushi is generally low in fat and high in protein, whilst seafood also contains omega-3 fatty acids, which have a variety of health benefits. The restaurant’s menu includes soups, prawn platters, sushi boxes, vegetable platters and vegan options.

Aside from sushi, they also serve grilled fish, including tuna and salmon, as well as teriyaki chicken. Fresh, locally sourced fish is used, and customers can see the sushi master, Alex Matviichuk, prepare their food in the open plan restaurant. The menu is set to constantly evolve, with new things added and more experimentation involved.

Another reason Patrycja decided to start up Japanese Sun was the location. Queen Street also has Diablo’s and Café at No4, whilst the adjoining King Street features The New Curiosity and Ginger. This part of Carmarthen prides itself on fine independent restaurants and helps Japanese Sun differentiates itself from the franchises and chain restaurants.

The building was the premises of The French Hen restaurant, and before that Y Glyndwr pub. The restaurant has two floors of dining areas, and there is the potential for a third should the Japanese Sun prove popular with the people of Carmarthen.

Japanese Sun opens Wednesday to Friday, 5pm until 11pm, and Saturday and Sunday, 12pm to 11pm.
