YOUNG people from 18 Carmarthenshire schools have been recognised for their positive contributions to peace and global citizenship.
As a result of the hard work of around 100 pupils, the schools involved have achieved the overall winner’s prize at the Young Peacemakers award ceremony which is organised by the Welsh Centre for International Affairs (WCIA) and the Llangollen International Eisteddfod.
The young people (aged 10-15) celebrated during the ceremony are Global Goalkeepers in the Walk the Global Walk project, an EU funded initiative which encourages young people to raise awareness of sustainable development goals.
The project has enabled the Global Goalkeepers to learn about a variety of global themes including the importance of peace and justice. They have been inspired to take action and share important messages across their schools and communities regarding issues including racism, fast fashion and rights for LGBTQ+ people.
A Global Goalkeeper from Ysgol Bro Myrddin said: “We’ve got everybody talking in our school about peace and equality, helping to make it more inclusive and friendly”.
A Parc y Tywyn pupil commented: “The project has taught me about the world, how it’s changing, and what I can do to help.”

Executive Board Member for Education and Children’s Services Cllr Glynog Davies said: “I am delighted that the Walk the Global Walk Project has enabled young people in Carmarthenshire to develop skills and learn about a number of important subjects. The project has also increased the young people’s confidence, improved their problem-solving skills and enabled them to develop a more positive outlook on life. Well done to everyone involved”.
The Walk the Global Walk project is led in Wales by Carmarthenshire County Council in partnership with Dolen Cymru Lesotho.
Carmarthenshire County Council is committed to becoming a net zero carbon local authority by 2030.
