Carmarthenshire woman wins national young farmers’ blogging competition

A WOMAN from Carmarthenshire has won a national competition to showcase her writing on NFU Mutual’s website.

Farmer’s daughter Anna Bowen, 24, has won NFU Mutual’s Fertile Minds blog writing competition for young farmers on the theme ‘A Taste of the Countryside’.

She has received a £600 cash prize and will have four blogs published on the leading rural insurer’s website between now and April.

Anna, who is an agricultural consultant, lives at her family’s dairy farm in Idole, near Carmarthen, where she helps out with administrative work, budgeting and costing exercises, and milking and heifer rearing.

She has a master’s degree in sustainable agriculture and food security from the Royal Agricultural University, Cirencester.

In her winning blog, she describes how changes in the seasons affect her family’s farm.

She said: “I was shocked to win the competition – it was a lovely surprise. NFU Mutual’s website is a fantastic platform for me to showcase my work. I’m looking forward to blogging about farming over the coming months.”

Peter Williams, Senior Agent at NFU Mutual’s Carmarthen branch, said: “I’d like to congratulate Anna on winning our Fertile Minds competition. She has written a vivid description of the variety of life in the countryside.

“As the UK’s main insurer of farms, we work closely with young farmers to help them develop the skills to succeed in today’s highly competitive marketplace.

“This is the perfect opportunity for Anna to build and develop her profile as a future voice of farming.”
