Back in the day: ‘Close Encounters of Glan yr Ystrad’ – first prize in Carmarthen Carnival, 1978, travelling through Glan yr Ystrad, Johnstown, Carmarthen.

THE CARMARTHEN CARNIVAL will be returning in May after an absence since the 1980s.

The carnival will take place on Saturday, May 28, and will consist of a parade starting at King Street and continuing through the town, and will finish with a series of fun events at Carmarthen Park to end the day on a high note. There are hopes that the carnival will once again be an annual event, and co-ordinator of the Carmarthenshire Twirlers, Jess Shore, says the event is being organised to commemorate 10 years of the company’s success.

Also included in the festivities will be the Carmarthenshire Water Safety Partnership, who will be promoting safety to young people of Carmarthenshire before the summer arrives, and althought plans have just commenced, the park has already been booked and te police have been told about the upcoming event. The communities who have been asking for a carnival to return for years can now come out and get involved. It will be a fantastic opportunity for clubs and groups to take park and make a contribution, whether with a float or something else.

Ms Shore said: “All these smaller towns and villages can do it, so why can’t we?” Members of the community have been trying to get the plans for the carnival up and running since September 2012, and have finally got together to bring it back. One member even requested the presence of Rhod Gilbert to open it, however we will have to wait and see what plans will unfold over the coming weeks and months.
