FIRST MINISTER Carwyn Jones was in Llanelli on Saturday (Apr 2) to attend the launch of the campaign for Labour’s AM Candidate Lee Waters.

During the visit the First Minister also spent time discussing the situation at Trostre with Lee Waters and The Shadow Secretary of State for Wales, Nia Griffith MP.

Labour’s Assembly candidate for Llanelli, Lee Waters, said:

“Nia Griffith and I wanted to brief the First Minister on the situation at Trostre ahead of his meeting with the Prime Minister this week. The situation at Port Talbot is very worrying and the knock-on effects for Trostre, and the whole local economy is of huge concern. From local engineering contractors to the hauliers and the local shops the ripple effect of losses would be devastating.

“We agreed that the U.K. government needs to agree to temporarily nationalise the company whilst a new buyer is sought. But crucially it also needs to allow the EU to take action against cheep imports from China. The Chinese are selling its steel for less than it costs to produce.

“The UK Government have been frustrating EU efforts to tax it like the Americans have to cancel out any unfair disadvantage. The Prime Minister also needs address the energy costs hampering the industry, and agree to green light big infrastructure projects – like the Swansea Bay title lagoon – and ensure that local steel is used in their construction.

“We are not powerless to stop the loss of our steel industry. But strong action is needed urgently”.
