Cat reunited with owners after river rescue

A BLIND cat has been reunited with her owners after becoming trapped on a river bank in Ammanford for several days.

It is believed that the one-eyed ginger cat had been stuck for at least two days on the river at Bonllwyn in Ammanford. She was becoming weak from trying to stop herself from falling in the water, which had been rising due to the heavy rainfall.

Thankfully following a rescue operation, she was successfully removed from the bank of the river on Tuesday (Jan 23) and has been reunited with her owners.

RSPCA animal collection officer (ACO) Nicole Wallace said: “This poor cat was stuck next to a fast flowing river and wasn’t able to get out of danger on her own.

Rescue: Where the cat was found

“She may have fallen down the embankment or could have even washed down the river. The people who found her had made attempts to reach her, but were unable to do so safely.”

Mid and West Fire and Rescue Service were called for assistance and an officer was able to make his way through some brambles to reach her and place her in a cat carrier. She was then handed to ACO Wallace.

“She must have been pretty scared being stuck there for that amount of time,” said ACO Wallace.

“She was really cold and lethargic so I quickly started to warm her and I took her to a vet for a check-up.”

Luckily the cat was microchipped and her owners were tracked down, thanks to help from Bush House Vets.

ACO Wallace said: “The owners were in tears on the phone as they had been really worried about her as she had been missing for a few days.

“She is 11 years old and is called Cerys. I noticed she only had one eye, but is in fact completely blind. She was really luckily she was spotted and it is great to have a happy ending where she has been returned to her owners.

“It really does highlight again the importance of microchipping your pets as it gives them the best chance of being identified and returned home if they become lost.

“I’d like to thank the caller who alerted us to this cat, along with Bush House Vets who were fantastic, and also to the fire service who were able to safely reach the cat who was rescued from a difficult predicament.”
