THREE LOCAL Cardigan teenagers recently stumbled upon a 400-year-old surprise while they were beachcombing at Patch.

13-year-old Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi classmates George Monders, Iestyn Evans and Taylor Harries, managed to find a cannonball which was discovered to date back to the Civil War.

George said: “We saw this big, round lump covered in barnacles and thought that it looked cool. We broke it apart and the cannonball rolled out.”

The three young people took their find into Cardigan Castle, which houses its own cannonball relic.

Sue Lewis, Facilities Officer for Cardigan Castle, said: “The castle was pounded with cannonfire by Cromwell’s troops in the Civil War. They were stationed opposite the castle across the River Teifi and bombareded the castle walls for days.

“Many of the cannonballs ended up in the river so I wouldn’t be surprised if the boys’ find was one that took centuries to migrate down the river bed.”
