Community ‘split’ over chicken shed proposal

A PROPOSAL to build a shed which would house 32,000 free range chickens has ‘split’ a community in Carmarthenshire, opponents to the plan have said.

The proposed shed, which would be located at Godre Garreg farm in Llangadog, would process and pack free range eggs.

But over 1300 people have signed a petition against the plan, with 79 objections submitted.

There have been 33 letters of support.

On Tuesday (Oct 3) the site will be visited by Carmarthen County Council’s planning committee, prior to making a decision.

Locals are worried about the smell and increased traffic.

Talking to the BBC, a local resident said: “I’m very concerned. I’ve lost a lot of sleep over this.

“It will devalue that property along with my mother-in-law’s property which is opposite. I’m not against them diversifying, but 18 metres from the property next door is not on.”

He added: “Smell is a problem. A south westerly wind blows over to the village and moisture with chicken muck is not a good thing.”
