LLANSAWEL’S Village Hall Trust hopes to transform the village’s primary school, which closed at Easter 2015, into a social-enterprise cultural centre for the Cothi valley. The site includes a field with ancillary buildings which could be improved into small business and craft units, while the main school building would become a local history centre with a cafe and shop.

Carmarthenshire County Council’s Planning Committee on Thursday, October 13, agreed to defer an application from the council itself to build two homes on part of the site, to give the hall trust enough time to prepare a full business plan.

The Village Hall Trust is a financially successful organisation which, in the past 18 months, has spent some £14,000, excluding volunteers’ time, on providing a new building adjacent to the hall and playground for the Cylch Meithrin, formerly housed at the school. The Cylch Meithrin has attracted more children and is open for longer hours. The trust has refurbished the public toilets and created a riverside park.

There is also a rival commercial plan for the school, submitted by local resident Mr Rhys Green, who wants to convert it into an outdoor education centre. Mr Green was due to hold a public meeting in Llansawel Village Hall on Thursday night (Oct 20) to debate his proposals.
