MYFANWY, a special and unique breed of cow was a guest at this year’s Welsh Dairy Show helping to raise money for farmers in financial need.
A competition to guess the cow’s lactation was organised by the Carmarthenshire county committee of the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (R.A.B.I) at the Welsh Dairy Show on Tuesday October 25. Members of the committee were also on hand throughout the day to provide refreshments to all who called on the R.A.B.I stand, including Lesley Griffiths AM, Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Rural Affairs.
R.A.B.I is a welfare charity formed in 1860 and gives out grants of around £2m each year to farming people in financial need. Last year, R.A.B.I helped around 200 families across Wales and gave out grants of £263k to farming families in hardship and distress.
Linda Jones, R.A.B.I regional manager for Wales, said: “We are very proud of the support we have given to farming families over the years in Carmarthenshire and this year, we have provided grants of £30k to people in the county. Many farming families are in financial difficulty through no fault of their own.”
Ivor Davies, joint chairman of the Carmarthenshire committee, added: “I would like to thank the Welsh Dairy Show committee for allowing us to bring Myfanwy to the show and for exempting us from the 6 day standstill rule. In all seriousness, it was a wonderful day, with people having a chat over a cup of tea whilst also having fun trying to guess Myfanwy’s lactation.”
The sum of £262 was raised to aid farming families in Carmarthenshire.
