Crabb comments on climate change campaign

STEPHEN CRABB MP has commented on the recent speech 16-year-old climate change activist Greta Thunberg made to politicians on Tuesday (Apr 23).

Greta, a schoolgirl from Sweden, started campaigning by striking from school every Friday and staging a series of protests outside the Swedish Parliament, with a hand written sign saying “School strike for climate”.

The teenager says her “gift” of living with Aspergers Syndrome is what fuelled her campaign, she says the condition allows her to see things in “black and white” and “out of the box”.

Stephen Crabb, MP for Preseli Pembrokeshire, wrote on his Facebook page: “A number of constituents wrote to me during the Easter weekend about the meeting with Miss Thunberg planned for today.

“I was committed in other meetings at Westminster, but my staff attended on my behalf. Greta’s overriding message was that it is a misconception that we have to lower our emissions, in reality we need to stop them completely.”

“There are no easy solutions to achieving a zero-carbon economy and whilst we may think we have done much to tackle carbon emissions, we really haven’t. There is a lot of room for disagreement and argument about specific technical solutions and policies. But we also need to hear that voice of idealism from young people too. So I was pleased that this meeting took place today.”

“Local environmental campaigner Jim Bowen was also in Westminster today, as part of the Extinction Rebellion protest. I was able to discuss with him climate change and the need for the scientific truth around climate change to be at the heart of government policy. We did not agree on everything but we had a useful discussion about the importance of this area and the need for further action.”
