Dog thefts up 200% in Dyfed-Powys region

THE NUMBER of dog thefts in the Dyfed-Powys region rose by more than 200% last year, research has revealed.

The  number of dogs stolen has risen from 23 in 2016 to 70 in 2017.

This figure means that dog thefts are the third highest in the UK in the area, behind only Lincolnshire and West Yorkshire.

In comparison, South Wales Police saw a 75% drop in dog thefts in the same period. Last year, a total of 2017 dogs were stolen across the UK.

In October last year, 15 West Highland terriers and King Charles spaniels were stolen from Carmarthenshire.

Commenting on the news, A Dyfed-Powys Police spokesperson said the force ‘has new crime recording practices which has meant we are better at more accurately reflecting the crime reported to us within our crime statistics, providing a better service to our communities’.
