Dwayne Peel: Shoulder injury forces retirement

IT IS the end of an era for the former Llanelli Scarlets, Wales and British Lions scrumhalf Dwayne Peel.

The Bristol captain who made 24 appearances for the club after joining them in 2014 has announced that he is retiring from playing rugby with immediate effect having suffered a shoulder injury. He is, however, remaining at the club as part of their coaching team.

Dwayne Peel won 76 caps for Wales and represented the British and Irish Lions on three occasions.

Peel started his rugby career playing for Tumble RFC at Under- 8s level. He attended Ysgol Gyfun Maes-yr-Yrfa in Cefneithin, and is a fluent Welsh speaker.

Dwayne Peel made his professional club debut for Llanelli RFC before moving to the Llanelli Scarlets region at its creation in 2003 and was the most capped scrum-half for the Wales national rugby union team until his record was surpassed by Mike Phillips.

“I am disappointed and saddened for Dwayne that he has been forced to retire because of the shoulder injury,” said Bristol Director of Rugby Andy Robinson.

“On behalf of Bristol Rugby, I’d like to congratulate Dwayne on a remarkable career. Everyone that has played with or against him knows what a fine, skilful player he was.

“Dwayne was also a fierce competitor who played with a real fire in his belly. He has been a special player for all the teams that he has played for, including Bristol.”
