Early morning river rescue drama

Screen Shot 2016-02-01 at 12.50.50A MAN was saved from being swept away in the River Dulais recently by the actions of a specialist rescue team.

In the early hours of Saturday January 9, the Pontardulais wading team responded to reports of a person being swept away.

The wading team rescued one person from approximately two feet of water and administered first aid before the person was conveyed to hospital. The crew rescued the water bound individual from being swept further down the river. Both Swansea Central and Carmarthen Swift Water Rescue Teams were mobilised, however were not required at the incident.

Firefighters left the incident at 2.59am.

As one of Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s 19 Water Rescue First Responder stations, Pontardulais is equipped with the training and skills to respond to water rescues.

Having attended 36 incidents of person water bound over the past year, MAWWFRS’ ability to attend efficiently and timely is now a key component of the services rescue capabilities.

Anthony Mathias, WM Technical Rescue Training Team said: “My team follows the ethos that the better trained, equipped and prepared we are as a Service; the better we can perform in rescue situations.

“The wading crew at Pontardulais station responded tremendously to this incident and performed a successful rescue. The nature of water rescues means that the sooner we can respond to an emergency the higher the chance of success will be”.
