PATAGONIA visit planned for two Carmarthenshire school girls, as part of an Urdd project.

Two girls aged 16, Menna Jones from Saron, Ammanford who is a student at Maes y Gwendraeth School and Elin Wyn James from Abergwili who is a pupil at Ysgol Gyfun Bro Myrddin will be visiting South America for the Urdd Gobaith Cymru volunteer project.

The two Carmarthenshire school girls have been chosen to visit Patagonia in South America as part of an Urdd project along with 25 other youngsters across Wales who were very lucky to be chosen from more than 90 other student applicants across the country.

While visiting Argentina they will be taking part in volunteer activities with children and young people. To reserve their spots the pair will need to each raise £2,400.

Elin said: “As I enjoy competing at Eisteddfods, representing Wales in the one held in Patagonia will be a great privilege.

“I have a very busy few months ahead of me raising money to finance the trip by organising fund raising events and contacting local businesses and sponsors.

“I’m sure the trip will be an experience that will stay with me forever.

Menna Jones has been an avid member of Urdd since she was five years old.

She has competed in folk dance, group and solo clogging and performance competitions. This year she has been looking for opportunities to extend her participation with the Urdd as well as searching for a new experience to use as her Duke of Edinburgh Residential Project which lead her to apply.

The youngster signed up for the project to travel to the Welsh-speaking Argentinian region to promote Wales and the Welsh language and work with young school children.

With competition for the places being exceptionally high, Menna said she was “delighted” when she found out she had been selected.

She said: “To take part in the event I need to raise £2,400 by the summer,”

“The cost of the trip covers all transportation and most of my personal needs, but also goes to fund the activities which I will be helping to deliver to the Welsh children of Chubut in Patagonia.

“Including running language classes, teaching them about Wales and their Welsh origins and organising Eisteddfods.

Menna added: “I am sure the experience will be life changing for me and I hope I can contribute something towards the children’s enjoyment of the Welsh language 7,500 miles away from Wales.
