First shout for RNLI crew

THREE members of Burry Port RNLI were called on their first ‘shout’ on Saturday (Jul 7) after another group of people got stranded near Pembrey Old Harbour.

On Saturday afternoon, Burry Port RNLI received reports of a small group of people who were cut off on the sandbanks, with the tide rapidly rising.

The D class inshore lifeboat was launched into action, ably led by helmsman Darren Sheppard, and crewed by Jordan Kelly, Meg Vaughan and Eli Jenkins – all three going on their first call.

While this was taking place, reports came in of a person collapsed on the beach in front of the slipway, so with Burry Port UK Coastguard, and RNLI shore crew assisting, this casualty was stretchered to an awaiting NHS ambulance.

“Congratulations to Eli, Meg and Jordan, first ‘shouts’ will always be remembered,” an RNLI spokesperson added.

On Sunday afternoon, the lifeboat received another call to the same area, where a small number of people were cut off further up the main inlet towards the salting area. Another small group was ferried to safety, and a few people with inflatables were advised about their safety.

The crew were Gary Morgan on helm, Osian Bowen and Doug Humphries as crew.
