First St David’s Day Parade a great success

MORE than 1,000 people joined in the fun on Saturday (Feb 27) when Carmarthen hosted its first St David’s Day parade.

Luckily, the rain held off for the parade, which was the first of its kind in south west Wales, although similar events have been held in Aberystwyth, Pwlleli and Cardiff.

The parade, which was led by local rugby legend Delme Thomas, started in Carmarthen Park, and marched along Lammas Street past the Guildhall, and along King Street, finishing by St Peter’s Church.

After speeches by Council Chairman Peter Hughes Griffith and Delme Thomas, the crowd was entertained by a performance from Côr Meibion Caerfyrddin, who led the crowd in a stirring rendition of the Welsh national anthem.

The parade was organised by Carmarthenshire County Council, the town council, and was supported by the Welsh Government through the Town Centre Partnership Programme.

Local politicians and Community Council chairs from across the county joined the parade, along with schools, and youth and community groups.

Speaking after the event, Cllr Hughes Griffiths told The Herald that the parade was ‘a great success first time out,’ and said he looked forward to its return next year.
