A NEW initiative named Local Energy Action has been launched by Menter Cwm Gwendraeth Elli and they are working with local communities to help individuals reduce costs on home heating bills and to help tackle fuel poverty.

One of the officers behind the project, Paul Thomas, is working with communities to set up ‘fuel clubs’.

Paul explained the clubs consist of “buying heating oil in syndicates in order to pass on bulk buying discounts onto fuel club members.”

The fuel clubs have proved successful to those community members who have joined the clubs, and have helped them save a lot of money by doing so.

Paul continued: “In recent months the new Tawe Twrch Fuel club, whose members have saved up to 10% on heating oil deliveries, have saved thousands of pounds for their members.”

These fuel clubs are established throughout Carmarthenshire, and frequently help householders save thousands of pounds on heating oil bills. Local Energy Action wish to expand the amount of fuel clubs in the area where there are no current provisions.

They also wish to branch fuel clubs onto the next step as there are an increasing number of people in rural communities that are now using wood pellets to heat their homes.

Local Energy Action was approached by experienced Fuel Club organiser Phil Turner to think about plans of setting up a Carmarthenshire Wood Pellett Fuel Club in order for individuals to get the best deal for wood pellets, and to also attempt boosting local trade, by encouraging the use of local suppliers.

There will be a meeting to discuss the formation of a new Wood Pellet Fuel Club on March 8 in Ammanford Pensioners Hall at 6:30pm, and a warm welcome to all has been given.

Anybody interested in becoming involved or supporting this new wood pellet initiative should contact Paul Thomas on 01269 871600 or via email: [email protected].
