Giant slide coming to Carmarthen

Soap slide: Giant structure to hit Carmarthen.

A GIANT slide is set to take up a Carmarthen s treet in early September. One of the organisers, town photographer Jason Thomas, has said that the ‘Ride the Slide’ event is likely to take place in either the first or second weekend of September.

The giant slide is set to run from Hall Street to Guildhall Square, and will present the opportunity for hundreds of people to shoot down soapy suds, and the structure, which is similar to one put up in Bristol of last year, has been given approval by Carmarthen Town’s Chamber of Trade and Commerce.

Earlier this year, Jason Thomas said: “The tide timetable for the year has just been released so we will be sitting down with the river festival organisers to see if we can tie in the slide with it. Having the slide in the town with the events on the river will compliment each other well and see people moving between the two.”

When asked why it would be in September, he commented: “What we don’t want to do is to go up against other events locally or in South Wales over the summer. Some people suggested putting on the slide in the same week as the Royal Welsh Show in Builth Wells, but there is just no way we can compete with that, it would be stupid as so many people go to that every year. The same applies to local events over the summer, we wouldn’t want to have the slide clashing with something else.”

He added: “People are always asking about the slide and we are working on it. Certainly it is fair to say that it has captured people’s imagination in the town and something we are all looking forward to.”

He went on to opine about the success the slide event had had in Bristol in May 2014, which had attracted large crowds, boosting the city’s image, he said, and he believes it will do the same f or Carmarthen.
