WELSH baccalaureate students at Ysgol Dewi Sant took part in a political debate with Assembly Member Joyce Watson on Friday (Jan 22).

The mock election took place at the North Pembrokeshire school ahead of the Welsh Assembly election in May, the Labour Mid and West AM was invited to talk with Year 11 pupils about democracy and voting.

Mrs Watson was questioned by students about how the Assembly scrutinises legislation and holds the Welsh Government to account.

Speaking of her visit to the school, Joyce Watson said: “I have for a long time been an advocate of votes for 16 year olds, today only reinforced my confidence in our young people. They were engaged, inquisitive and knowledgeable about Welsh politics, as well as a wide range of current affairs, domestic and international.”

The event was organised by Deborah John, St David school’s Welsh Baccalaureate coordinator, as part of the ‘politics’ element of the advanced qualification.

Joyce added: “I am very grateful to Mrs John for arranging the session. I wish the students every success in their future studies.”
