Knife-point ATM thief jailed for six years

Swansea Crown Court

A MAN who forced a Login man at knife-point to drive to a cash point and withdraw money has been jailed for six years on Friday (Apr 8).

Daniel Maynard, aged 26, got away with £140 and then threatened to make up false allegations against his victim if he went to the police.

Maynard, of Brynteg, Pentremeurig, Carmarthen, had denied robbery but was convicted following a trial.

A jury at Swansea Crown Court heard how Maynard met up with the man at his caravan home in Login after they had made contact via a website for homosexuals.

The judge, Mr Recorder Peter Griffiths, described Maynard as six feet tall and weighing 15 stone while his victim was twice his age and much smaller.

Maynard picked up a knife, telling the man, “I don’t normally do this.”

He then forced his victim to drive to a cash point at Tesco in Carmarthen, holding the knife to his side during the journey.

Once there Maynard made him hand over his bank card and to give him his pin number.  Maynard withdrew £200, but, oddly, gave £60 back to his victim.

The following day Maynard sent him two telephone text messages threatening to make a complaint of anal rape should he contact the police.

Mr Recorder Griffiths said he had put “a rather lonely man” through a terrible ordeal. “He was petrified throughout the whoel ordeal,” added the judge.

He said he accepted that robbery had not been Maynard’s intention when he set out for Login.
