LLANELLI RAILWAY GOODS SHED has finally secured the full complement of funding needed to start on phase one of the renovation of this listed building for community use.
The Garfield Weston Foundation has stepped in to complement the funding provided by the Railway Heritage Trust, Carmarthenshire County Council and Welsh Government through the Targeted Regeneration Initiative. The Garfield Weston Foundation has pledged to provide a total of £90, 000. This will enable work to begin on the former Goods Shed situated in Marsh Street, Llanelli.
Nia Griffith MP who chairs the trustees of the Goods Shed explained, “We are extremely grateful to the Garfield Weston Foundation for pledging these funds to us. This will be the final piece of the funding jig-saw which will enable us to get started…… and we are really keen to do so, before the building deteriorates any further.”
“We have done a lot of work to keep costs down, and very much look forward to seeing work begin in earnest on the renovation. In spite of all the difficulties caused by Covid19, we have had considerable support from the County Council with the project over the past few months, and this is now a really exciting time for this part of Llanelli. The renovation of the Goods Shed will give a real boost to the area and will complement the County Council’s regeneration plans.”
“Pupils and teachers from local schools have already been involved with us in exploring the industrial heritage of the area, and we really look forward to being able to show pupils exactly where trains brought goods into Llanelli, and the very important contribution of the railway to the economic development of Llanelli.”
