Man fined for ‘threatening’ behaviour in DIY store

A PENSIONER who shouted at staff in a Carmarthen DIY store after becoming ‘frustrated’ over their refusal to open an extra till appeared at Llanelli Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (Dec 28).

71-year-old Peter Ronald Barber pleaded guilty to one charge of using threatening or abusive behaviour which was likely to cause alarm or distress.

Prosecuting, Sian Vaughan told the court that on September 19, Barber had been shopping at the B&Q store, when he became angry that only one till was open. He then shouted at staff, and his body language became ‘threatening’.

Mitigating, John Allchurch drew attention to Barber’s previous good character. He added that the defendant, who retired from his job at a caravan company in Carmarthen some years previously, had become ‘frustrated’ during the course of his shop.

“He was in the queue and saw a sales assistant ‘standing around’, and asked them to open another checkout, which they refused to do,” he added.

Describing Barber’s behaviour as ‘very uncivilised’, District Judge David Parsons fined him £120, and ordered him to pay prosecution costs of £85 and a £30 victim surcharge.
