Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service issue road safety warning

Fatal 5 - EnglishMid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) is issuing a warning to road users following 8 road traffic collisions in Mid and West Wales over the weekend period, (Jul 22 – Jul 25).

We urge drivers to remember the Fatal Five, the five main causes of road traffic collisions and injuries in Wales.

  1. Don’t Drink And Drive
  2. Kill Your Speed
  3. Don’t Get Careless
  4. Belt Up
  5. Switch Off Your Mobile Phone

MAWWFRS Community Safety Manager, Neil Evans said: “During the summer months the volume and range of road users, throughout Mid and West Wales, increases substantially.

The roads are used every day of the year by people commuting to and from work and also commercially by heavy goods vehicles.

Now that we are in the middle of the holiday season there is an increase in caravans and campervans on the roads, whilst the good weather also sees farmers tend to their harvest and other duties in tractors and other large agricultural machinery. There is also an increase in motorcyclist and cyclist taking to the roads.

With this in mind we urge road user to drive to arrive. Please bear in mind the higher number of roads users and the differing pressures on each driver. Be patient.

The Welsh summer weather is typically unpredictable, rain or foggy conditions following hot temperatures can cause the surface of the road to become greasy.

Please take care and allow a greater stopping distance between you and the vehicle in front, and always reduce your speed in these conditions.

Drive safely and think about what maybe around the corner or ahead.  Think once, think twice, think bike.”

Make sure your vehicle is in good working order, including the headlights, brake lights, indicators, screen wash and wipers.  Make sure you have good visibility, and keep your windscreen and visor clean at all times.”
