weeks after a massive clean-up
by the National Trust
SIMON HART MP has set up a meeting to try to resolve the illegal camping and fly -tipping taking place at a remote bay near Pendine.
Good weather has led to an almost permanent presence of campers at the National Trust-owned Morfa Bychan.
“The problem is getting worse and I am hearing reports of scrambler bikes being used by campers, trees being cut down for firewood and the rubbish piling up again,” said Mr Hart.
In May , he joined the National Trust in a day-long beach clean , which saw a skip-full of waste removed from the bay, including a burned-out caravan and bags full of used nappies and beer cans.
The problem arises because a track that leads to the small cove means that anyone can drive down to the bay.
The road is used regularly by Welsh Water as they need access to a reservoir pumping station at the beach and the lane is classified as a Byway Open to All Traffic (BOAT).
“I have been in touch with the council to ask about what possible restrictions are allowed to be put in place on a BOAT and their access officer will be attending the meeting,” said Mr Hart.
“The whole area is also a SSSI and is therefore afforded extra protection , but I have had reports of peregrine’s nests being disturbed and long netting taking place on the beach. To that end , Natural Resources Wales is coming along to discuss what measures can be taken to protect the SSSI.
“Welsh Water also tell us that although they haven’t had any access problems , there is an issue with defecation in the area and so they will also be there.
“I am hopeful that getting all these different agencies together will result in some action that will give this beautiful, wild spot the protection it deserves.”
