Peace Walk reaches Carmarthenshire

Screen Shot 2016-04-05 at 14.07.28HERE AT The Herald we can get strange phone calls at the best of times.

So it was on Tuesday (Mar 15) that we received a call to get out and take a look at a strange group of men walking the road between Furnace and Kidwelly.

“It is a sight to behold” said the caller. “You must go and take a look, you can’t miss them.”

As The Herald press car cranked up and cameras were loaded, thoughts of some men in fancy dress or an Oompah Band dressed in Sgt Pepper outfits came to mind.

Figuring that at the time of the phone call, the strangers whose grab had caused such bemusement to our caller were passing through Furnace, we decided to head them off somewhere between there and Trimsaran.

As we approached a roadside farmhouse with a pull in we could see a group of six men in robes progressing along the road at a good clip.

As we got out of the car, one of the men walked towards us with a big smile, offered his hand and introduced himself. He told us that he was a plastic surgeon at Leicester University Hospital and that he was on a ‘peace walk’.

The group consisted mostly of doctors who had taken four months unpaid leave to complete a walk from Cardiff to Ramsey Island and then on to Gloucester. They started their walk almost a month previously.

We were told that they were protected from danger by ‘the creator’ and that we all worship the same God.

The Herald asked if they had been welcomed and well received as they walked through the county.

The peace walkers told us that they enjoyed engaging with people as they walked, and that they wanted to bring peace into their lives as well as into the lives of others.

One of the doctors told us: “We’re staying wherever we can find a place along the way and people had been very kind. People have been smiling and waving and there has been a lot of love shown to us.

“People in Wales are the most beautiful people and they have soft hearts.”

The doctor from Leicester told us that he believed that Welsh people were closer to the creator because they were close to the land.

As we parted he said: “There is only one religion and only one message.”

We handed them some Easter eggs for their journey and parted at the junction to Kidwelly, Trimsaran and Pontyates.

We joked that the road had been newly tarmaced for them by the local County Councillor and they said that they were most grateful for the black carpet.
