Plaid and Independents continue ‘strong’ coalition

PLAID CYMRU has joined with Independent councillors to continue their successful administration of Carmarthenshire County Council as a coalition.

Cllr Emlyn Dole, Leader of Plaid Cymru, said he was delighted with the results of the county elections and has announced that he will continue to lead the council, with Cllr Mair Stephens – new Leader of the Independents – as his deputy.

Executive Board positions are yet to be decided, but will be shared between both groups, with Plaid Cymru taking seven positions and Independents taking the remaining three.

No announcements have yet been made regarding who will lead each of the council’s Executive Board portfolios.

Speaking after negotiations, Cllr Dole said the continued coalition would provide the stability needed to progress long-term policies and strategies that are already in place to regenerate Carmarthenshire.

“Although Carmarthenshire has never voted for a majority rule – no party has got as close as Plaid Cymru has got this time, which can only be a reflection of our achievements in the last two years when we led this strong coalition with the Independents,” he said.

“We are pleased that we can continue our successful partnership with the Independents to provide strength, stability and continuity for the council as we move forward with our exciting and ambitious plans for Carmarthenshire.”
