Plaid win key Ammanford by-election

LABOUR, which has controlled Ammanford Town Council for 21 of the last 22 years, has lost control of the council following a by-election on Thursday (May 17).

Captain of Ammanford Football Club, Rhys Fisher, stood for Plaid Cymru in the Iscennen Ward by-election. His opponents were Thomas Fallows for Labour and Emyr John as an Independent.

The result was:
Rhys Fisher (Plaid Cymru} 237
Thomas Fallows (Labour) 79
Emyr John (Independent) 45

Mr Fisher’s victory came in the teeth of an allegation made by Labour County Council leader Rob James that suggested County Council leader Emlyn Dole had favoured an application for an Ammanford regeneration project on the basis of party interest.

Not only did Cllr Emlyn Dole deny Cllr James’ allegation, Cllr James’ comments resulted in a blistering reply from local party workers who highlighted the curious timing of the allegations’ appearance in the week of key town council by-election in Ammanford.

As well as leading the town’s first football team, Rhys Fisher, 27, is a former pupil at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman and works at Coleg Sir Gar assisting those undertaking an apprenticeship course.
