Planning permission sought for Y Gwyll mural

mural-mock-up-4139WELSH broadcaster S4C has applied for planning permission to place a mural on the side of a building in Aberystwyth.

The broadcaster is seeking permission to place a mural celebrating its hit TV series Y Gwyll, broadcast in English as Hinterland, on the end wall of the Art Shop in Pier Street.

Detective drama Y Gwyll, which is set in Aberystwyth and the surrounding Ceredigion countryside is one of S4C’s biggest hits. The series has been sold abroad and garnered awards around the world and has won praise for its cinematography and the performances of its cast.

Cast members Mali Harris and Richard Harrington have been nominated for multiple awards for their portrayals of  DI Mared Rhys and DCI Tom Mathias. Aneirin Hughes’s alternately chilling and haunted performance as Chief Superintendent Brian Prosser has been widely praised.

In recent interviews with Herald reporter Rhian Angharad Morgan, both Richard Harrington and Mali Harries drew attention to the importance of the Ceredigion setting to the series’ atmosphere and success.

Ceredigion’s highways department has raised no objection to the plan.

A spokesperson for S4C told The Herald: ‘Aberystwyth is an essential and integral part of the production, and if we get planning permission, a mural painting in the middle of the town is a way to thank the local people for their dedication to Y Gwyll’.
