Pole attacked his girlfriend

Swansea Crown CourtA WORKER from Poland who tried to strangle his partner, cut her with a knife and then tried to persuade her to lie has been jailed this week (Jun 29)

Pawel Wolczuk, of 69 High Street, Lampeter, admitted assaulting Monika Agnieska Zalewska causing her actual bodily harm and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Stephen Rees, prosecuting, told Swansea Crown Court the couple had been in a relationship for six years but on February 16 a row broke out at Miss Zalewska’s flat in Lampeter.

Wolczuk, aged 40, pinned her to a bed and applied pressure to her throat while holding a kitchen knife, which caused a cut to her back during the struggle.

Miss Zalewska managed to escape but Wolczuk caught up with her and again put his hands around her neck.

Mr Rees said she later told police it had been a miracle that she had managed to get away.

Wolczuk was arrested by police and remanded into custody. But while he was in jail he telephoned Miss Zalewska and asked her to lie about the incident and not to mention the knife.

Dyfed Thomas, representing Wolczuk, said he was a hard working man who had travelled to Wales to find work.

The court heard that in his native Poland Wolczuk had previous convictions for being involved in drugs and possessing a firearm.

Mr Thomas said firearms were more common in Poland than in Wales.

He said Wolczuk had not tried to strangle his former girlfriend but had “assaulted her in the neck area.”

The judge, Mr Recorder Greg Bull, said both had been drunk at the time and Wolczuk had lost his temper.

He said he accepted that the cut to her back had been the result of Wolczuk recklessly holding a knife while involved in an assault rather than a deliberate stabbing.

Woczuk was jailed for 12 months for the assault and an additional four months for the attempt to pervert justice.

Mr Recorder Bull also issued a restraining order banning Wolczuk from contacting Miss Zalewska during the next five years.
