Police Station closure sparks row

ST CLEARS has had a police station for over a century.

The original police station was located on Pentre Road and housed a court house and prison cell. It closed in 2011 and was sold for housing, after which the station was moved to Station Road.

Now, Dyfed-Powys police and crime commissioner Christopher Salmon has confirmed that the St Clears police station will close and says he hopes the building would be sold with operations moving six miles (10km) away to a re-opened station at Whitland.

And, as the station is prepared for closure, local residents have taken to social media asking for people to vote out Christopher Salmon at the next election for Police and Crime Commissioner.

The announcement has left residents in St Clears worried that crime will increase as a result. The town has suffered from a spate of crimes and anti social behaviour in recent years ranging from damage to pubic property, burglaries and thefts to violent crimes. The most recent spate of burglaries targeted local shops including a cake shop and a butchers.

Alistair Cameron, Welsh Liberal Democrat Candidate for West Carmarthen and South Pembrokeshire in May’s Assembly elections, said the plans raise many questions.

Alistair told The Herald: “This is further bad news for St Clears which unfortunately lost two banks last year. I am also concerned that how this leaves people in Llansteffan and Laugharne who will have much further to travel to get to their local police station.

“Although this may be welcomed by some residents in Whitland we need to also think about its impact on St Clears which unfortunately lost two banks last year. It is vital that people in St Clears can get easy access to the police as well as people in Llansteffan and Laugharne and other rural areas.”
