THE CONSTRUCTION department at Pembrokeshire County Council has announced it is recruiting for its first apprentice.

The new role of Apprentice Project Manager will see the successful applicant working within a team of construction professionals including architects, quantity surveyors and energy officers.

Recent projects completed by the team include the flagship Glan-yr-Afon library and cultural centre in Haverfordwest, Ysgol Harri Tudur/ Henry Tudor School in Pembroke and Ysgol Caer Elen in Haverfordwest.

Darren Thomas, Head of Infrastructure, said: “Taking on an apprentice in project management offers many advantages all round. They earn while they learn and develop work skills essential for the successful delivery of projects. It is a positive step for us and shows a commitment to supporting learning and development.”

The successful applicant will assist members of the team on different projects as well as shadowing the project manager of each discipline on the delivery of projects, from inception to completion.

At the same time, he or she will receive training from Cadcentre UK Ltd, with view to achieving a Project Management Level 4 Diploma.

Architect Maria Jones said: “We have always known the importance of having staff with a broad range of ages and experience, and providing them with a supportive environment in which to develop their skills.

“For example, one of our project managers came to us for two-days-a-week- work experience just over 10 years ago, and is now project managing the multi-million pound Haverfordwest High VC School project.”

Cllr Phil Baker, Cabinet Member for Planning and Infrastructure, said it was a fantastic opportunity for a young person to gain entry into sustainable employment within the construction industry.

“Modern apprenticeships are very different,” he added. “The opportunity to have real project experience while undertaking training is invaluable.”
