Safety for motorcycle riders is a ‘priority’

Safety day at Owl’s Nest Tea Rooms: Road Safety Officers offered advice and information to motorcyclists

ROAD Safety Officers from Carmarthenshire County Council have been out and about discussing road safety with motorcyclists as part of a new initiative to reduce the number of casualties involved in motorcycle collisions.

Joining officers from partner agencies, Council Road Safety Officers went to the Owl’s Nest Tea Rooms in Llandovery on Sunday March 27 to give information and advice on staying safe on Carmarthenshire roads.

Also in attendance were the Institute of Advanced Motorists, RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Services, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Blood Bikes Wales.

Council officers also managed to sign up a number of motorcyclists to its free bike courses ‘Dragon Rider Cymru’ and ‘Biker Down! Cymru’.

Stephen Pilliner, Carmarthenshire County Council’s Head of Transport and Engineering and also Chair of the Community Safety Partnership’s Road Safety Action Group, said: “The day was a great success with many motorcyclists engaging with us and our partners and further engagement days will be held throughout the year.

“Reducing the number of motorcyclists killed and seriously injured on our roads is a priority for the council and partner agencies and much work is underway to educate both motorcycle riders and other drivers in relation to safety and driving/riding skills.”

For more information about the courses, which are free to Carmarthenshire residents thanks to road safety grant funding from the Welsh Government, visit the council’s website, or follow the South West Wales Motorcycling page on Facebook.
