Sentencing adjourned for ‘drunk’ mother

A MOTHER who took her young child to the pub with her while she consumed ‘a large quantity of alcohol’ appeared before magistrates in Llanelli on Thursday (May 24).

The Carmarthenshire resident, in her 30s, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to being drunk while in charge of a child under the age of seven.

The court heard that a bar worker at the pub reported their concerns to the police after the defendant and a friend went into the public house and drank a large amount.
Prosecuting, Lisa Jones said that the young child was seen running around and rolling on the floor while her mother drank.

The defendant was described as ‘unsteady on her feet’ when she left.

Police attended at her home, and found the defendant asleep in the front room. After spending some time waking her up, they located the child safely upstairs in their bedroom.
In an interview, the defendant told police she would never neglect her child, who she described as ‘my life’. However, she admitted that she had been drinking.

Defence solicitor Laura Sherwood explained that the child was currently in the care of social services.

Sentencing was adjourned for three weeks to allow the probation service to prepare a report. The defendant was released on unconditional bail until then.
