IT may have been a bad weekend for the Swans on the pitch – but it wasn’t just in the footballing world where the swans were sent down.
A swan feared to have been involved in a road traffic collision was given a ride by Dyfed-Powys Police officers in the cell of a police van last weekend, offering vital support to the bird in her hour of need.
The bird was collected by Police from Pembrey Flats, on the A48 between Kidwelly and Pembrey. The swan’s rescue took place on the same day that Swansea City AFC were relegated from the Premier League.
Fortunately, this swan’s plight had a happy ending. She was taken to Burry Port Police Station and collected by an RSPCA officer – who took her for urgent assessment and rehabilitation at a local specialist centre.
The swan was found to be fit and well enough to be returned to the wild – so RSPCA Cymru was able to safely release the swan at a lake in Burry Port, approximately 17 miles from Swansea City AFC’s Liberty Stadium home.
Ellie West, RSPCA animal collection officer, said: “Many people in the area, including in my own family, were absolutely gutted last weekend when the Swans were sadly relegated from the Premier League.
“But it wasn’t just in the footballing world where swans were being sent down! This lucky bird took a ride in the cell of a police van, as Dyfed-Powys Police officers kindly offered vital assistance after finding the animal following a suspected a road traffic collision.
“Fortunately, she was found to be fit and well after a night at a specialist centre, and RSPCA Cymru was delighted to be able to return her to the wild at a lake in Burry Port.
“Rescuing and rehabilitating wildlife is a huge part of the RSPCA’s work – and happy endings like this are such a rewarding part of the job.
“We’re hugely grateful to the Police for their assistance with this rescue – and helping ensure this swan’s welfare was protected. At least it was a lucky weekend for one swan in the area!”
