Swansea shopping centre evacuated

A SHOPPING centre in Swansea has been evacuated after reports of a suspicious package being found.

The Quadrant shopping centre, at the heart of the city’s shopping district, was evacuated and cordoned off by emergency services shortly after 2pm earlier today (May 24).

The bus station and Swansea Market have also been evacuated, and Oxford Street, leading up to the shopping centre, remains closed.

A BBC reporter has said on Twitter that that a man ‘has been detained after police chased him through Oxford St in Swansea City Centre’.

Shoppers and traders are reported to have heard an alarm go off before being evacuated.

South Wales Police have issued the following statement on Twitter: “We’re investigating a suspicious package at the Quadrant Shopping Centre. The Quadrant has been evacuated. Thanks for your patience.”

BBC News reported that staff at Primark on St Mary’s Square, opposite the entrance to the Quadrant, have been allowed back into the store.

First Cymru Buses has advised commuters to catch buses from Wellington Street instead, adding that services are likely to be delayed.
