Tierney puts no-deal pressure on Hart

LABOUR’s Parliamentary Candidate for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire, Marc Tierney has called on local MP and member of Boris Johnson’s government, Simon Hart to rule out a no-deal Brexit.

Mr Tierney made his call following a series of engagements with business leaders, farming representatives, unions and community leaders at the Pembrokeshire County Show this week.

The UK Government has ramped up preparations for leaving the EU without a deal on October 31st following the EU’s decision against renegotiating the so-called ‘Irish backstop’. It was a significant element of the agreement already reached between the UK and EU under Theresa May’s premiership to protect the peace process in Northern Ireland.

However, since the Brexit referendum in 2016, local businesses reliant on imported raw materials and goods have had their profit margins cut as a result of a weakening of the British Pound against the Euro and the Dollar. Others have reported pulling back on new investment in their business because of the current economic uncertainty.

Labour’s Marc Tierney said: “From my discussions at the show this week and elsewhere, a no-deal presents the worst possible exit from the EU. No one involved in a business or industry which trades internationally is in favour of us crashing out. They understand that trade is important and the way goods and services are transacted across borders has changed considerably over the last 50 years.

Last week, after accepting a job with Boris Johnson and Michael Gove, Tory MP Simon Hart was quick to assure local voters that he wouldn’t forget this constituency. However, by toeing the Tory government line and putting a no-deal Brexit first, it is very clear that he is acting directly against the interests of his own constituency.

“I want Mr Hart to acknowledge that a no-deal Brexit is bad for us here in West Wales and our future prosperity. The direction his government is taking us in will only further impact local businesses, our farmers and our communities.”
