MARK WILLIAMS, Member of Parliament for Ceredigion and Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, has voted against the Second Reading of the Government’s Brexit Bill.
The 133 word Bill would enable the Government to invoke Article 50 and take the UK out of the European Union.
Commenting on the vote, Mark Williams said: “The Government’s Brexit Bill has failed to provide any assurance over the future of Welsh business, families, workers, and gives nobody the assurances they need on the future stability of our country.
“While I respect the decision that was taken by the country to leave the European Union, people did not vote to threaten livelihoods, and if the government goes ahead with plans to pull us out of the European single market, businesses and families across Wales will suffer.
“Liberal Democrats believe that the British people should have the final say over our future relationship with Europe, and we have called for a referendum on the terms of the deal at the end of the negotiating process. It cannot simply be left up to the government to make decisions which could have enormous consequences for everyone in our country without consultation with the public.
“The Government has ignored our calls, and for this reason I would be failing my constituents and the people of Wales if I was to support this inadequate blank cheque Bill.”
