crowncourt-1024x681A TUMBLE soccer player was out for more than half the season after being attacked for a reason no-one could explain.

Rhyddian Samuel Williams was knocked out and could not even remember being assaulted–and his attacker had been so drunk he could not remember why he had hit him.

Morgan Lloyd Thomas, aged 19, of Penylan Farm, Natnycaws, Carmarthen, admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Kevin Jones, prosecuting, told Swansea Crown Court on Monday (Aug 1) how the two men had been in the Spreadeagle pub, Carmarthen, on September 6 last year.

Although neither could recall much about what happened it was clear, thanks to images from a CCTV camera, that immediately before the assault they were talking together outside the entrance to the toilets.

Mr Jones said they did not appear to be threatening each other but Thomas suddenly landed a “forceful” blow and walked away.

After recovering consciousness, Mr Williams, a 20 year old butcher, wandered outside and was spoken to by a police officer.

“He had no idea what had happened,” added Mr Jones.

But it was clear he was injured and he was taken to Swansea’s Morriston hospital where doctors diagnosed a complicated series of fractures of his left cheek.

Mr Jones said the attack had a serious effect on Mr Williams’ life. He had been a keen player for Tumble but had been told by doctors not to play sport for at least four months.

And his life’s ambition had been to join the Royal Navy but he had had to put his application on hold.

David Williams, the barrister representing Thomas, said he hoped that one day he could meet Mr Williams and apologise to him.

Thomas was made the subject of a community order for 18 months, plus 200 hours of unpaid work for the community.  He was also ordered to pay Mr Williams £1,200 compensation and a court surcharge of £60.
