Waterstones welcomes critically-acclaimed author

DAVID SHAW MACKENZIE, the critically-acclaimed author of the The Last Wolf, will be reading from and discussing his new novel at Waterstones Carmarthen on November 15.

David previously wrote The Truth of Stone, which was short-listed for the Saltire Society Best Scottish First Book Award, and The Midwest Book Review identified Mackenzie as ‘an especially skilled author able to craft memorable characters and embed them into a riveting story’.

Brothers Maurice and Christopher have not spoken to each other for over 40 years, despite living on the same small island. And nobody talks about Maurice’s first wife, Hester – until an apparently unconnected act of vengeance reverberates across the generations and carefully guarded secrets begin to unravel. Ranging from an island off the west coast of Scotland, to London, Paris and Capri, The Last Wolf traces the impact of the hidden secrets of the past on the lives of future generations.

David said: “The Last Wolf explores how complicated relationships shape the world around us. It is a novel about how different people cope with change and come to terms with, or fail to come to terms with, the past.”

David Shaw Mackenzie is from Easter Ross in the Highlands of Scotland. He is the author of two critically acclaimed novels, The Truth of Stone (short-listed for the Saltire Society Best Scottish First Book Award) and The Interpretations. His short fiction has appeared in many literary magazines and anthologies, including New Writing Scotland, Stand, Edinburgh Review, Chapman, News from the Republic of Letters and three editions of ‘Best Short Stories’ anthologies.

Book reviewer Alastair Mabbott said: “The Last Wolf starts with a scene so nail-bitingly tense that you’re left wondering where it can possibly go from there…Featuring a cast of distinct, well-drawn characters all looking at the same events from their own differing perspectives, Mackenzie’s third novel is an engrossing and well-crafted tale.”
Seonaid Francis, Director of ThunderPoint added: “The Last Wolf is an intimate tale of lies and betrayals lightly and deftly told by a master storyteller.”

The Last Wolf is published by Llandeilo-based ThunderPoint Publishing, and the reading takes place on Thursday, November 15, 6:30pm, at Waterstones Carmarthen in Guildhall Square.
