Assistant bank manager stole £18,000 from cash machine

AN ASSISTANT bank manager who stole almost £18,000 from a cash machine at the branch where she worked will be sentenced at Swansea Crown Court.

47-year-old Suzanne Butler, from Dunvant, Swansea, pleaded guilty to one charge of theft from an employee when she appeared at Llanelli Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (Feb 22).

The thefts took place between December 2016 and January 2017.

Prosecuting, Sian Vaughan told the court that the total amount stolen by Butler was £17,900.

She explained that Butler had many responsibilities in her role as assistant branch manager of Halifax in Carmarthen. She added that the defendant had been hiding her thefts by taking money from the cash machine and using it to balance the float.

During police interview, Butler told police that the money was being used to cover shopping costs. Ms Vaughan added that she had previous convictions, and Lloyds Banking Group – the owners of Halifax – were seeking to recover the money.

Butler’s solicitor Laura Sherwood said that her client was currently ‘very emotional’ and had experienced ‘a traumatic time telling her family what she has done’.

Jurisdiction was declined, and Butler will be sentenced at Swansea Crown Court on March 23. She was released on unconditional bail until then.
