SHADOWING an executive board member of Carmarthenshire county council for a day was a ‘rewarding if exhausting experience’, said youth council member Geena Ware.

The 17-year-old Ysgol Dyffryn Aman pupil from Garnant said there was more to being a councillor and Carmarthenshire Council than met the eye.

She said: ”People tend to think just bins, busses and schools when it comes to local politics. But it is much more complex as my takeover with county social care and health executive board member Cllr Jane Tremlett showed me.

“With visits to the County Hall to meet members of the executive board; senior council managers and officers; a nursing home meeting staff and residents and Llanelli East Gate council offices to see the busy call centre in action.

“As I am studying politics with an interest in social care and health as the Carmarthenshire Youth Council’s liaison officer with the NHS, it was both rewarding and encouraging to see how the council works with so many agencies to resolve the many complex issues that daily arise.

“It was also amazing to witness residents at the council run Y Plas nursing home in Felinfoel enjoying an afternoon of a ‘day at the races.’”

Geena will provide feedback of her hectic day to the monthly meetings of the youth council and file a report about her takeover day for their website.

Cllr Tremlett said: “My colleagues have told me it has been a two-way highly beneficial learning curve accommodating the ‘takeover days.’

“Geena took a keen interest during her whirlwind experience of the council’s social care and health functioning.

“I am sure this cultivation of relationships will help to promote the voice of the county’s youth and help us support them in ongoing and future projects.”
