Council forbids horse riders from using school footpath

SIGNS to discourage “irresponsible” horse riders have been put up in a popular playing field.

Conwy County Council put up the two signs at Gyffin playing field.

They have been placed next to the play area and the footpath adjacent to Ysgol Porth y Felin.

The signs were put up a few weeks ago during an event, but it has now emerged that the signs were placed there after complaints to the council about a horse rider using the footpath.

A spokeswoman for Conwy Council said: “The signs are in place to remind people of the bylaw in place which does not permit riding horses in the Gyffin recreation area, which has happened previously.”

Wendy Tobias-Jones is a local horse rider and said she’d heard about the incident.

“I think an irresponsible horse rider has ridden their horse through there and up and under the underpass and through Conwy,” she said.

“It is a danger. You should not be taking horses through recreational parks where children are playing, so I’m fully supportive of it.”

Another riding school instructor based at Llangwestenin, who asked not to be named, said the council were right to put up the signs.

“If there are children in the park or people are moving around, the horses shouldn’t be in the park,” she said.

“It is too dangerous. Horses in Conwy can go up the Synchant Pass. There is plenty of room for horses to go up the private pass.

“I haven’t seen the signs. But it is up to the council. They are entitled – and have the law on their side – if they think it is safer.

“Also horses do damage the ground. It has never been allowed for horses to ride in the park.”

She added: “If there isn’t a bridle path, then horses shouldn’t be in the park.”
