RUTHIN could soon have a brand-new outdoor velodrome.
The council-owned Denbighshire Leisure Ltd has applied to Denbighshire County Council’s planning department, seeking permission for the new cycling facility.
Used for track cycling, a velodrome is an oval track with steep banks, consisting of two circular bends connected by two straights.
The construction will include earthworks, fencing, a natural turf infield area, hardstanding, and a storage building where bikes can be kept, together with a separate multi-use sports area.
The velodrome is proposed to be built on grassed playing fields.
If Denbighshire Leisure Ltd is granted planning permission, the velodrome’s opening times will be 9 am until 10 pm seven days a week.
The multi-use games area will be open 9 am until 5 pm seven days a week.
According to the application, neighbours have been consulted, but the applicants commissioned an independent noise assessment, which concluded the nearest properties that could be affected were at Ffordd Cunedda and Stryd Brython.
But the assessment stated that noise would unlikely bother neighbours, although a ‘no-sports whistle’ policy could negate that particular risk further.
Floodlights are included in the plans, but the lights would be switched off outside the operating hours.
The planning application will be debated at a future planning committee meeting at Denbighshire’s Ruthin County Hall.
