Pupils at Mynydd Cynffig Primary have a say on plans for new school.

IN June 2022, Bridgend County Borough Council’s Cabinet approved the expansion and
modernisation of Mynydd Cynffig Primary School.

Under the £12.8m project, funded by the council and Welsh Government, the existing split-site
arrangement would end, and the current infant and junior sites would be merged and relocated
to a new-build primary school on the existing Mynydd Cynffig Primary School junior site at
Pwllygath Street, Kenfig Hill, with effect from September 2025.

The new school will be able to accommodate 420 pupils as well as offering 75 nursery places,
delivering a more positive impact on education provision and standards as well as sufficient
accommodation that meets the needs of staff and learners at Mynydd Cynffig Primary School.

The new building and external areas would also provide access for extra-curricular activities.

On Friday 21 July 2023, a pupil engagement session was held in the school, involving pupils
from Year 3 to Year 6, where a “fly-through” animation of the school site and building was
shown to the children, along with three-dimensional computer-generated imagery.

The images allowed the children to envisage how the development will look and feel when it’s
built. Pupils and staff were very excited to see the plans and had lots of great questions to ask
and ideas to share.

Deputy Leader, Councillor Jane Gebbie, who attended the sessions with staff and pupils, said:
“It has been a really exciting and interesting session, with both the staff and pupils having an
input on the plans for their new school. Everyone was very enthusiastic, and the fly-through
animation really brought the proposed plans to life.

“We are extremely keen to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to share their thoughts
and ideas and to be involved in the development of the new school from start to finish. We will
continue to work closely with the school, and we plan on holding further events in the new
school term in September 2023.”

A pre-planning consultation process for the new development is expected to start in August
2023.
