Cardiff developer install pergola at Lansdowne surgery for community use

LEADING partnerships developer Lovell has arranged for a pergola to be installed in the Lansdowne surgery garden in Canton, Cardiff, offering patients and volunteers a place to rest while they attend Grow Well Project sessions.

Grow Well is a partnership set up in 2016 by Grow Cardiff, a grassroots charity that helps people to create and sustain shared gardens across the city, and the South West Cardiff Cluster. The project aims to use therapeutic community gardening as a tool to support patients’ health and wellbeing.

At Lansdowne surgery, which is located nearby the popular The Mill development, volunteers host weekly sessions where patients, surgery staff and interested passers-by can get involved by planting a variety of plants and edible produce.

The pergola was put up by Lovell subcontractors W.D.L Contracting Ltd, who put in the groundworks, and Advanced Carpentry Solutions (ACS), who built the pergola itself. The structure will provide volunteers and patients with shelter from the sun, wind and rain, and offer them a place to relax and socialise.

Claire Terry, Project Coordinator at the Grow Well Project, said: “It’s made an immediate difference to the volunteers to have some shelter in the garden, from the sun, wind and rain. The garden looks more homely and welcoming when you can see a place to sit for a drink and a chat as soon as you walk in. Being able to offer shelter and comfort is key in a wellbeing group, and we look forward to welcoming the community into our beautiful courtyard to see what we’ve got growing.”

Gemma Clissett, regional partnerships director at Lovell, said: “We are delighted to have organised the installation of this pergola, and to have teamed up with our subcontractors W.D.L Contracting Ltd and ACS to give back to the Canton community.

“The Grow Well Project is a fantastic initiative, providing surgery patients and staff with the opportunity to learn a new skill, get active and socialise with peers. Community gardening has huge wellbeing benefits, and we’re thrilled to be supporting such a wonderful scheme.

“We hope that all those who take part in the Grow Well Project enjoy spending time underneath their new pergola, and we can’t wait to see what they grow next.”

Elliot Palmer at W.D.L Contracting Ltd, said: “The Grow Well Project is a great scheme, and something we were delighted to support. It’s been wonderful to see the finished result, and we hope the community enjoy relaxing and socialising under their new pergola.”

Jamie Langdon, Construction Manager at ACS, said: “We were thrilled to get involved with this project, and build a brand-new pergola for Grow Well Project attendees to use. We hope that this pergola provides the community with many benefits and allows them to spend time in the garden whatever the weather.”
