New Lord Mayor chooses food bank to benefit from her year in office

COUNCILLOR Jane Henshaw has officially taken up her role as Cardiff new Lord Mayor.

She was presented with the official chain of office at a ceremony in County Hall today, during Cardiff Council’s annual general meeting.

Formerly the Deputy Lord Mayor to Cllr Bablin Molik, Cllr Henshaw has chosen Cardiff Food Bank as her nominated charity, a cause close to her heart.

“Through my work on the Council, I have seen at first hand the great work the staff and the volunteers at the charity do, how they are changing lives in these difficult times and helping people out of poverty. It is a sad fact of life today that they exist at all, of course, but I am determined to help Cardiff Food Bank in any way I can this year.”

The CEO of Cardiff Food Bank, Rachel Biggs, attended the Mayor-making ceremony today and spoke to the Council about her work.

Cllr Henshaw, who now has the title The Right Honourable the Lord Mayor of Cardiff, was first elected to the Council in 2017 and represents the Splott ward. She has a BA degree in English and History.

Originally from Wrexham, she moved to Cardiff in 2014 and is the mother of four children. She also has four grandchildren. Her daughter, Angharad Anderson, will support her as the Lady Mayoress.

Cllr Helen Lloyd Jones, who represents Radyr and Morganstown, was elected as Deputy Lord Mayor.
