A FIRE at a store has seen a high street engulfed in smoke this morning (May 23).
The fire is believed to have started shortly after 9am this morning on Monnow Street, Monmouth.
Multiple fire engines are in attendance and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service have confirmed crews from Monmouth, Aberbargoed and Caerphilly stations are dealing with the incident.
Eyewitnesses in the area have said that the fire was at a local Peacocks store and large plumes of thick black smoke engulfed the high street.
There is a road closure in place in the street which extends from the Peacocks store to Holland and Barrett.
A spokesperson for South Wales Fire and Rescue said: “At approximately 9.20am on Monday we received reports of a fire on Monnow Street in Monmouth. Crews from Monmouth, Aberbargoed and Caerphilly stations are currently in attendance alongside emergency service colleagues. This incident is currently ongoing.”
Police were also on scene to assist with traffic management.
A Gwent Police spokesperson said: “We received a report of a fire on Monnow Street, Monmouth at around 9.35am. Officers attended, along with firefighters from the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, to assist with traffic management. The road is currently closed and the incident is ongoing.”
Reports from the area suggest that the fire has died down.
In images from witnesses shared on social media, the shop can be seen with windows blown out and the exterior of the building blackened from fire damage.
